How to create a crossword

1. Fill in the metadata. Enter a title and description, choose a category (from the tree’s subcategories), and add tags. After typing the first tag, you’ll see suggestions with the most frequently used labels from the last week.
2. Set the crossword type and language. Available variants: Standard, With Key Phrase, and With Key Phrase in the Middle. If you have multiple languages enabled, you can choose the language of the crossword.
3. Connect answers. Answers must touch by letters. The cell above a down answer and the cell to the left of an across answer are blocked (they should remain empty).
4. Add answers on the board. Click a grid cell to enter the clue, answer, source, and direction (down/across). The answer number appears in the first cell, and letters are placed according to the chosen orientation.
5. Work comfortably. Pan the board with the left mouse button, zoom in/out with the scroll wheel, and drag to move entire answers when needed. The board expands automatically as you approach its edge.

Legend and additional features

• A red outline and a number in the bottom-right corner indicate a letter chosen for the key phrase.
• You can edit answers by clicking them on the board or using the “Show answers” list.
• Collisions are checked automatically — only one letter may occupy a cell, and intersecting answers must share the same letter.
• In the With Key Phrase type you can indicate the letters forming the key phrase manually or automatically; the wizard verifies that all of them appear on the board.
• In the With Key Phrase in the Middle type the key phrase runs vertically on a yellow background, and all remaining answers are across. Changing to this type will fail if there are down answers on the board.
