New feature: change clue numbering in the crossword creator

The Knowie crossword creator now includes a new feature: Change clue numbering. It’s a fast way to fix clue numbers after Auto‑fit or manual grid edits — especially when you need a non‑standard order (e.g., alternating even/odd).

Why change numbering?

While building a crossword, numbering can change:

  • after using Auto‑fit,
  • after moving entries manually,
  • when multiple entries start from the same cell.

Until now, fixing numbers meant clicking and editing each entry by hand. Now you can do it in one place.

How does the “Change clue numbering” panel work?

In the creator, next to Auto‑fit, you’ll find the new Change clue numbering button. Clicking it opens a window with all clues and their numbers.

In the panel you can:

1) Edit numbers manually

Each entry has its own number field. Enter new values and confirm.

2) Shift numbering by an offset

There’s a quick “Shift all numbers” field. Enter a value (e.g., +1 or -1), click Shift, and you’re done.

3) Auto‑renumber everything from scratch

Click Auto number to assign unique numbers in the order entries start on the grid.

What happens after you apply changes?

After clicking Apply, numbering updates immediately on the grid, and the clue list gets the new numbers. No page reload needed.

Extra fix: unique numbers

We also fixed a bug in Auto‑fit: when two clues started in the same cell, they received the same number. Now every clue always gets a unique number.

Summary

The new Change clue numbering panel gives you full control over clue numbers. It saves time and lets you match numbering to your style. Combine it with the improved Auto‑fit and you get full control — without manual edits for every clue.

Screens will be added to this post soon.
